Come Play the Carne Shell Pro-Am 2017

The Shell Pro-Am rolls into town on the 16th and 17th of June. Now's your chance to play alongside Ireland's best, writes Kevin Markham.

Watching a Pro golfer hit a ball, up close and personal, is always a privilege. Yes, you see the best of the best on the TV, week in, week out, but TV and real life are very different things. When you’re standing a few yards away you will appreciate the skill, the timing and the technique all the more.

But why leave it at watching… why not play alongside a Pro for the full experience?

I like the 18th because it’s a par five and generally a birdie opportunity. I like it because it’s difficult. It’s risk vs. reward: good drive you’ve got a chance… bad drive you can’t play the hole.” Damien McGrane

There are a lot of Pro-Ams which take place around the country during the year, and these are as popular for amateurs as they are for the Pros. The Pros have their own order of merit and there is a fierce but friendly rivalry between them. In other words, they’re not just showing up for an exhibition game. Winning matters, which means you will see them at their best.

The Shell Carne Pro-Am takes place on 17th and 18th June and it is a very popular event, with hundreds of golfers competing over the weekend.

The 17th. It’s stroke Index 1. There’s no bail out off the tee. You’ve got to commit to it. And then you’re looking at a really demanding second. You’ve got to hit two fantastic golf shots.” Dan Beatty

The 17th without a shadow of a doubt. Probably my favourite links hole in Ireland.” Michael Collins

If you’d like to play alongside a Pro at Carne, you can enter a team of three or you can enter as a single and be teamed up with two other amateurs. Remember, there are team prizes so your score and the Pro’s score can all count.

The Pro is not there to give you tips… but that doesn’t mean he might not give you a helpful piece of advice. I was privileged to play with Neil O’Briain a few years ago in a casual round at The Island. After 15 holes he asked if I would like a tip based on what he had seen of my game. Of course I said yes. His advice consisted of 20 words… and that advice has since helped my short game to improve considerably. Clearly my advice to him has proved hugely beneficial, too, seeing as he is now on the Sunshine Tour! Not that I can remember what it was.

My favourite hole at Carne would be the 8th. Love the tee shot. You’ve got to hug the corner as much as you can. Just a true links hole.” Kenny Fahy

Even watching these Professionals can prove instructive and, let’s not forget, you’ll be playing one of the most spectacular and dramatic links courses in the world. Those dunes are spell-binding and Eddie Hackett’s last piece of design magic is, in my opinion, the best.

Seeing how the Pros tackle holes such as the 8th, with its narrow downhill chute to the green, and the 17th, one of the 10 toughest holes in the country, will be an education…

… and a whole lot of fun.

My favourite hole is probably the 11th. It’s so unusual, coming from a height around the dune. It’s a fabulous hole.” Mark O’Sullivan
